Why We Do What We Do

We’re here to change the way the world cares for animals by leading with empathy, knowledge, and genuine connection.

We understand the anxiety cat parents feel when leaving their companions, because true cat care can be hard to find. That’s why we created Empathy Cats: a community of passionate animal lovers dedicated to providing thoughtful, reliable care for your animal companions, with a special focus on cats. With Empathy Cats, you’ll find gentle hands, open hearts, and real understanding, so you can travel or work late knowing your feline friend is safe, happy, and cared for. We honor your cat’s unique quirks, comforts, and routines, and believe every pet is a sentient individual deserving of respect. What sets us apart is the guidance and support that naturally emerges from our open communication with you. We're not just caring for pets; we're building lasting relationships based on trust and a shared love for animals, creating a nurturing environment where they can thrive.

A Message from the Owner

The Beginning

Empathy Cats began with a moment of connection—a bright-eyed, extroverted cat named Cinderella greeting me at eye level in a Pet Food Express adoption room. Her purrs and happy trill made it clear she was meant to be part of my life. The staff told me she was bonded with Roo, a shy and reserved companion who would be lost without her. Though I hesitated—wondering if I had enough space, or if I was being responsible bringing home two cats—I took the leap. Watching Cinderella and Roo settle into their new home, I realized what a gift it was for them to have each other, especially when I was away at work.

Changing Perspectives

Growing up, my exposure to cats was limited and colored by misconceptions. My father, like many, saw cats as nuisances, shaped by his own experiences. But when he moved in with me after I’d had Roo and Cinderella for about a year, something changed. He saw their personalities, their affection, and their companionship—and he told me they changed his mind about cats. It was a reminder that, although we all have our shortcomings or imperfect views, we can grow and open our hearts in unexpected ways. My father had a good heart, and I cherish that transformation.

Discovering Community

As I became a cat parent myself, I discovered a quiet, close-knit community of people who understood the unique needs and quirks of felines—yet their stories were rarely shared outside their circle. I saw a clear gap: while dog care was everywhere, cat care was an afterthought, even as more people welcomed cats into their homes. Even veterinary professionals often lacked the knowledge or gentle approach cats require. I knew there was a need for something different.

Humble Beginnings

My first client experience was a humble beginning—charging just enough to cover my transportation, bringing my partner along for support, and learning as I went. I quickly saw that every pet parent has their own parenting style, but one thing is universal: the deep love we have for our animal companions. The learning never stops, for any of us.

A Turning Point

The defining moment came in 2020, when my dad passed away. My parents had always normalized death, and while I was mentally prepared, the reality still evoked a mix of emotions: sadness, relief, longing, and above all, gratitude. Then, in 2021, I lost Cinderella, my first soul-cat. That loss pushed me to seek more purpose in my life. My parents had instilled in me a desire for entrepreneurship—my mother providing stability, my father always willing to try, to learn, even if his businesses didn’t last. I admired his courage to try, and realized that success isn’t just about the outcome, but about the willingness to take the leap. With the unwavering support of my partner Josie, who encouraged me to pursue my dream and stood by me through every up and down, I turned my side hustle into my life’s work.

Everyday Pride

What fills me with pride isn’t just the reviews or gratitude from clients—it’s the small, practical ways I can make life better for both animals and their people. Whether it’s sharing a simple trick to keep ants out of food bowls, recommending pet-safe solutions, or helping clients avoid costly mistakes with products, I love empowering others with knowledge. Sometimes, clients come to me when they feel lost or unsupported by the veterinary system. I never give medical advice, but I do my best to help them ask the right questions and advocate for their companions. My own experience with Cinderella’s illness taught me how important it is to be part of the discovery process, and I hope to save others from unnecessary pain by sharing what I’ve learned.

Meaningful Moments

One of my favorite moments as a pet sitter happened recently, when a client reached out to book a visit for her cat Ada’s birthday. She told me, “It’s Ada’s birthday and I thought it would be a treat to see you when we’re gone.” I was so touched that she thought of me as someone who would make Ada’s day special. It’s moments like these—when clients see me not just as a service provider, but as a friend to their animal companions—that remind me why I do this work.

Our Guiding Principle

Empathy isn’t just in our name—it’s our guiding principle. I believe that while we can’t always control our thoughts, we can control our actions. Practicing empathy means holding myself and my team accountable to see things from our clients’ perspectives, especially when we have differing perspectives. It’s easy to love the pets ; sometimes it’s harder to approach pet parents with understanding when we have differing perspectives. But empathy is what bridges that gap. It’s also why we don’t use the word “owner”—animals aren’t objects, but sentient individuals. We are their companions, their parents, their advocates.

Always Learning

If there’s one thing I wish every new pet parent knew, it’s that you don’t have to know everything at the start. Perfectionism only delays growth. Every day is a chance to learn, and every mistake is an opportunity to do better. I’m grateful for the years I had with Cinderella, and I know her spirit guides me as I help others on their journey.

Empathy Cats is here for those who believe in learning, growing, and loving with intention. If you share these values, you’re already part of our community.
